MOTIONAL EMP

The emf induced by the motion of a conductor across a magnetic field is called Motional emf.

EXPLANATION:

Consider a rod of length is placed on two parallel metal rails.A galvanometer is connected between two ends of the rails to detect the current flowing due to electromagnetic induction.
When the rod id moved to the right with constant velocity"V" across the magnetic field which is directed into the page then the charge "q" experiences a force "F" from end "a" end "b" as shown in the fig.

This is the Motional emf

The direction of force can be determined by tight hand rule.
As a result the charges migrate to the top end of the conductor and concentration of charges is produced
at the top and deficiency of charges at the bottom.
An electric field "E" directed from top too bottom sets up due to this redistribution. The system quickly
reaches an equilibrium stat and moving rod behaves like a source of emf .

MATHEMATICAL DERIVATION:

 As we know that
